Kamo River, Kyoto — a riverside where people and wild birds come and go, perfect for a break

The Kamo River flows north to south through the eastern part of Kyoto City (23 km in total). The riverside paths are full of people walking and running, and the stretch from Sanjo to Shijo is a great area for shopping, food and sightseeing.

The popular Kamogawa Noryo-yuka — dining on wooden terraces built over the river in summer — is said to date back to the Edo period, and at its peak hundreds of river terraces were bustling with guests.
