The Fushimi-Momoyama Mausoleum was built as the tomb of Emperor Meiji, who died on July 30, 1912.

The mausoleum stands on the site of the main keep of the former Fushimi Castle and measures an impressive 127 meters east to west and 155 meters north to south. Its location is said to have been chosen according to Emperor Meiji’s will.
