Togetsukyo Bridge spans the Katsura River and is the symbol of Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most popular sightseeing areas. A bridge was first built here around 834 by Dosho, a disciple of the monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai). (Ukyo-ku, Kyoto)

The bridge is 11 meters wide and 155 meters long. It is said that Emperor Kameyama named it Togetsukyo (“moon-crossing bridge”) the moment he saw the moon appear to move across it.

The contrast between Togetsukyo and the mountains of Arashiyama behind it is breathtaking. Cherry blossoms in spring, autumn leaves in fall — you can enjoy the beauty of nature here all year round.

Arashiyama Park, near Togetsukyo Bridge, is a spot where you can enjoy open views.
