Sanada-an (Zenmyosho-in) was founded in 1741, in the Edo period, by the priest Daian, on the site of the house where Sanada Yukimura and his father Masayuki lived in hiding. (Kudoyama-cho, Ito-gun, Wakayama Prefecture)

After the Western Army lost the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Sanada Yukimura and his father Masayuki had their Ueda domain confiscated by Tokugawa Ieyasu and were sentenced to lifelong confinement on Mt. Koya.

However, life on Mt. Koya was too cold and harsh, so they are said to have moved to what is now Sanada-an in the town of Kudoyama.

Masayuki died in Kudoyama in 1611.

Yukimura became a monk for a time, but after talks with an envoy sent by the Toyotomi family, he resolved to fight the Tokugawa once more. He escaped from Kudoyama and entered Osaka Castle.

The Sanada family crest of six coins (rokumonsen) is carved deeply at Sanada-an.
