KIMONOMACHI’s “Kimono Horidashi Ichi” sale in Kyoto Gojo, October 16–18 — new “Kimono Fukubukuro” 20% off

In Kyoto’s Gojo area, kimono that are usually only sold online can be touched and tried on for three days. Kyoto-born kimono brand KIMONOMACHI (Kyoto Kimonomachi) will hold “Kimono Horidashi Ichi” (roughly, “kimono treasure-hunt market”), an in-store sale event, at its head office annex in Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto, from Friday, October 16 to Sunday, October 18, 2026. This time it comes with a special sale to mark the debut of the 2026 autumn/winter (2026AW) collection of its “Kimono Fukubukuro” line.

Mix and match the new “Kimono Fukubukuro” at 20% off

The star is “Kimono Fukubukuro”, KIMONOMACHI’s signature line of washable casual kimono. Online, it is mainly sold as ready-coordinated sets, but at this venue you can freely combine a kimono, obi (sash), obiage and obijime (sash scarf and cord) and more. Buy them as a set for 20% off, or individually for 10% off. Being able to check colors, patterns, fabric texture and fit in person before deciding is the big advantage of shopping in store.

For autumn outings there are also washable solid-color iromuji kimono that work for children’s events such as Shichi-Go-San as well as tea ceremonies and lessons, lace haori jackets, stylish zori sandals, and original boots designed by a kimono maker to make your feet look neat. Denim kimono are available too.

Recycled kimono and seconds for treasure hunters

True to the event’s name, there are also seconds and slightly flawed items in discontinued original designs, plus recycled kimono that have finished their life as rentals. Many items are not sold online, and most recycled kimono are limited to stock on hand, so it may be worth coming early if you are interested.

Sizes go up to 4L for women and 5L for men. There are also undergarments and accessories such as the quick-drying “coolpass” nagajuban (under-kimono) and kimono bras, plus men’s kimono and samue (work wear). Products are normally kept in an outside warehouse, so chances to see them in person are rare. For items not on display, tell the shop the 6-digit product number by phone or email at least three business days before your visit, and it will bring them in if in stock (up to 5 items per group).

Beginners welcome, no reservation needed

The staff on hand usually run Kyoto Kimonomachi and the kimono rental shop 夢館. You can try on kimono for size and get advice on matching obi and accessories. Buyers receive a dressing guide and a QR code for how-to videos, and about 20 kinds of sheets explaining how to tie an obi and more are handed out. No reservation is needed.

There are visitor perks too. Come in kimono or yukata and spend ¥1,100 or more to get a patterned han-eri (decorative collar); spend ¥5,000 or more to play a capsule-toy “gacha” machine for a chance to win lace tabi socks or hair ornaments. The shop also accepts kimono for full-wash cleaning (drop-off only).
