Winter flavors at Kyotanabe outdoor resort “Kyoto -Sai-”: all-you-can-eat oysters and seafood miso or Kyoto-style sukiyaki hot pots from November

Grill oysters by the netful in a Kyoto forest as winter sets in. Wood Design Park Kyoto -Sai- (“Kyoto -Sai-”), an outdoor resort in Kyotanabe, Kyoto Prefecture, will begin limited winter menus in November 2026: an all-you-can-eat oyster plan for day visitors, plus a choice of seafood miso hot pot or Kyoto-style sukiyaki with dinner for overnight guests.

The facility held its grand opening on May 23, 2026, so this is its first winter. Oysters by day and a warm hot pot by night: guests can pick the winter flavors that suit how they spend the day.

First at Kyoto -Sai-: all-you-can-eat oysters you grill yourself

This day-visit-only plan lets groups lay shell-on oysters on a grill and cook them themselves. The idea is to enjoy the whole experience, including the wait for the shells to open, together around the grill. It suits family winter outings and get-togethers with friends.

There are two courses (all prices include tax):

  • 70-minute all-you-can-eat (90-minute seating): adults ¥5,500, elementary school children ¥3,500
  • 100-minute all-you-can-eat (120-minute seating): adults ¥6,500, elementary school children ¥4,500

Preschoolers pay no seat fee but are not eligible for the all-you-can-eat oysters; they order from the kids’ menu separately. Drink plans can be added: soft drinks for +¥800 per person, or alcohol plus soft drinks for +¥1,600 per person (tax included). Kyoto -Sai- also continues its day-trip BBQ, available either with food provided or bring-your-own, so you can try winter flavors in the same outdoor spirit.

Overnight: seafood miso hot pot or Kyoto-style sukiyaki

On winter stays, dinner can be either of two hot pots.

The seafood miso hot pot combines seafood with Kyoto vegetables. Its flavor rests on “Ikkyu Miso,” made in Kyotanabe, which pairs the umami of seafood such as oysters with the sweetness of the vegetables. It is served as a set meal, from appetizers to a finish of udon, egg and Kujo green onion, plus dessert.

The other choice, Kyoto-style sukiyaki, features four kinds of meat with Kyoto vegetables: domestic beef loin, domestic duck loin, Kyoto pork and chicken. Comparing the umami and texture of each is part of the fun, and “Which meat next?” is bound to come up at the table.

30–40 minutes by car from central Nara, Kyoto and Osaka

The resort is in Kyotanabe, about 30 minutes by car from central Nara and about 40 minutes from central Kyoto or Osaka. It is a renovation of the former Kyotanabe City Outdoor Activity Center, and offers cottages and a hostel for overnight stays, forest walks, craft workshops and a café.
