Kyoto brand SANGOU unveils new dabo shirts, with a preview and collab happi coats at Kyoto KBS Hall on Nov 15

A Kyoto-born brand has pulled the festival jacket into streetwear. SANGOU, an apparel label based in Kyoto, has announced “HYBRID DABO SHIRT SERIES” for spring/summer 2027, a reinterpretation of the dabo shirt, a loose garment traditionally worn at Japanese festivals and for work. On Sunday, November 15, 2026, the brand will hold its own music festival, “KYOTO DARUMA MATSURI,” at Kyoto KBS Hall, and visitors can preview and try on the new pieces at a booth in the venue.

Dabo shirts mixed with rock, grunge and skate culture

SANGOU was founded in 2017 in Kyoto. It takes traditional techniques from across Japan and turns them into clothes through an underground-culture lens. Its signature piece is “KABURI,” a T-shirt designed to be worn and washed until it fits your body. For the new dabo shirts, the brand keeps the rugged silhouette and deep V-neck, and mixes in rock, grunge, skateboarding and low-brow art.

The line-up has eight styles: “DABO-ALOHA” with a Hawaiian vintage pattern, the plain “DABO-BLACK,” “DABO-PAISLEY,” the buffalo-check “DABO-GRUNGE,” “DABO-FIRE WHEELS” with a Wanyudo (a Japanese yokai) on the back, “DABO-SK8” with a three-eyed tiger, plus “KABURI Type 2” and the happi coat “Date-otoko Kumiai.” The brand says each style uses a different fabric to express a different culture. The dabo shirts cost ¥20,500–¥25,500 (tax included) and the happi coat is ¥36,800 (tax included). Everything is made in Japan, and delivery is planned for February 2027.

Limited collaborations with Tokusatsu, TAKUMA, Koji Ueno and OLEDICKFOGGY

The pieces on preview at the venue are collaborations with four of the festival’s performers.

  • Tokusatsu (Kenji Ohtsuki): the “Tokusatsu Happi Coat.” It features a yatai-mon crest hand-drawn by designer 菊田参号 and the lyric “Inu inu inu inu neko neko neko neko” set in Edo-style square lettering. ¥38,800 (tax included)
  • TAKUMA (10-FEET) “VietdubROPA” × SANGOU: a “guitar and flower print dabo shirt” with an all-over pattern mixing guitars and flowers. Six colors, ¥24,500 (tax included)
  • Koji Ueno × SANGOU: “Four-String Rebel,” inspired by a Fender Precision Bass. ¥22,500 (tax included)
  • OLEDICKFOGGY × SANGOU: “KABURI Type 2” made from Takashima chijimi, a traditional textile from Shiga. ¥22,500 (tax included)
